Radio Voz do Emigrante was founded in March 17, 1988 by Frank P. Baptista. Radio Voz do Emigrante is firmly committed to serve the Portuguese – speaking community and the world via its live stream. Its unique programming is designed to best serve its vast audience – music, talk, sports, weather, interviews, roundtables, live broadcasts, etc. Radio Voz do Emigrante has been a true link to the American Society for nearly thirty five years!

Portuguese Population

Portuguese Population

The Portuguese-speaking population, which includes primarily those from  Portugal, the Azores, Madeira, Cape Verde and Brazil is the largest ethnic group in the region. The Portuguese language is the second most spoken in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. In Massachusetts, the Portuguese-speaking population is concentrated mainly in the Bristol County with Fall River being the city with the largest numbers. The Portuguese-speaking is very influential ethnic group socially , culturally, politically and economically. The same can be said of the Portuguese-speaking population in Rhode Island. 

Portuguese communities

Portuguese communities can indeed be found along the East Coast of the United States, and they have contributed significantly to the cultural and social fabric of the region. Here are some areas on the East Coast with notable Portuguese communities:

  1. New Bedford, Massachusetts:

    • New Bedford has one of the highest percentages of people of Portuguese descent in the United States. Historically, Portuguese immigrants, particularly from the Azores and Madeira, played a crucial role in the city’s fishing industry.
  2. Fall River, Massachusetts:

    • Like New Bedford, Fall River, located in southeastern Massachusetts, has a substantial Portuguese-American population. The city has a rich cultural heritage with Portuguese festivals, events, and a variety of Portuguese-owned businesses.
  3. Providence, Rhode Island:

    • Rhode Island, including the city of Providence, has Portuguese communities that have made cultural and economic contributions to the region.
